expats or traitors?

When we were kids we often heard the tale of “kutti mein mutti”, of the little boy who was reluctant to leave a game of marbles to go to pee, incase someone cheated on him. So he peed into the little hole, dug in the ground as ‘goal’, so the game would be disrupted and then could begin afresh after he relieved himself properly.
One is tempted to believe this is the attitude of expats from their homelands in underdeveloped countries. First they fleece the home country for subsidized quality education which wins them seats in foreign universities, jobs et all. And then, once they have settled in, instead of trying to do something constructive for the homeland, they fish in troubled waters, funding separatist movements and airing various theories with little knowledge of ground realities beyond the eerie word pictures of concerned relatives. There is often little awareness of the larger picture of a massive Indian subcontinent with all its myriad peoples and their equally myriad problems. Only a zeroing in on parochial interests with violent agitations. Is it concern for the motherland or merely to ensure that they retain their supremacy over home country cousins who may otherwise prosper at home too?
Witness the Punjab Khalistan movement funded by Sikhs in foreign lands, the JKLF with its foreign links and a still ongoing unstable state, the Northeast with its leaders fulminating in exile rather than roughing it out with the cadres at home.
The latest to join this band wagon are the Tamils in Canada who migrated long ago seeking greener pastures who have now raised a banner demanding international trial of the Sri Lankan President for war crimes, like Saddam. In the first place, who are they to demand something like that when they have left Sri Lanka already?
Secondly, what war crimes? Shooting down of some guerrilla leaders who had held local populaces hostage? Police encounters do so every day in every country with local criminals too. What has been the ‘human rights ‘ record of the LTTE and its chief? If any harsh action has been taken to achieve some ‘peace’, it would be akin to breaking some eggs to make an omelette. At times, it is difficult not to feel that the whole LTTE movement with its roots into various developed countries was not a calbierated and deliberate attempt to sabotage the development earlier taking placein Sri Lanka.
And finally the reference to Saddam. Who in the world actually believes that ‘justice’ is meted out in the US kangaroo courts? Do these Canadian Tamils want their erstwhile homeland Sri Lanka also to bend at the knee for such justice?

Have we lost before winning

Time was when Women's strength was in Multi tasking. That helped them to break the Glass ceilings.
But beyond the Glass Ceiling, women have gotten so involved in managementese, in becoming part of the boys' clubs and networks, that they've forgotten their separate identity and strength; forgotten to remain in touch with their feminine roots, forgotten all about multi tasking which was their USP.
Why must women emulate men who have failed and brought the world to this stage of ruin? why must corporate women be as sartorially male as they can get, subsuming their feminity? will that help enhance efficiency?
Witness the women in banking. They occupy all the rarified top echeleons in the RBI, the ICICI, HDFC etc etc. And sitting in those rarified atmoshphere, hitherto manned entirely by males, they have forgotten their inherent feminity and chosen to emulate the maledom to preside over horrendous price rises in common needs to chase that elusive 'profit ratio'. Since they no longer run their kitchens presumably, they are unaware that even when inflation was down to zero, prices of veggies and groceries were on the constant march upwards with full support for the biggies in retail and the markets.
Where then is the difference between the guys and the gals?

medical fiefdoms

Medical specialists have taken over our bodies to carve out their personal fiefdoms: the gastroentrologists who know about nothing but the stomach, not even the spleen next door, the nephrologists, urologists, diabetic specialists, ophtalmologists, orthopaedics, the cardiac guys who know of nothing else but the heart etc etc. in days to come, we can anticipate a doctor who only knows about the mitral valve of the heart, or only the left nostril or the right thumb or only the medula oblangata and nothing else.
No one knows of anything but their specialities but all of them to a man are totally dependent on the radiologists and the pathologists to make their diagnosis...otherwise it is no go.
And woe betide the person who has a pain in a region of the body where is no bone or special organ for some medico to specialise in. May be, the patient may just find himself being packed off to a psychiatrist to examine his head for daring to experieince such an unspecialisable pain!!

Words

Words spoken in anger

Frozen in Time.

Unspoken apologies

Frozen in silence.

Flying recriminations cast in iron

Mute regrets await healing absolution

Verbal spears

Frozen in time and frozen Absolution.

Memories past so tender

Present realities so bitter

IPL Vs. INDIA

It is the most unlikely and distasteful of matches, IPL versus India; a contest between the primary essence of democracy, elections which have made India the envy of many democratic and autocratic countries, especially our neighbors, and a game spectacle.
Should we begin to suspect that there is a suspicious ‘foreign hand’ in the vigorous efforts being made to field the IPL against the elections, using the security issue as an excuse?
Regular, free and fair elections are what sets India apart in the world community today; that we are able to move ahead, carrying forward the entire disparate segments of our society is the biggest achievement of the Republic of India to date.
But does that status or constitutional niceties matter to the likes of the Modis, the Ambanis and the Mallyas etc the stakeholders in the IPL?
The security issue is an obvious concern and a very valid one. Recent happenings in Mumbai and Lahore are pointers. There is also the consideration that the authorities would not want anything to happen any time any place, least of all in the midst of elections. More so when we are looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games in Deli next year.
Should we begin to suspect that the urgency with which the BCCI is pushing the IPL is so that no other sport can hope to threaten to take over the “sanctified” place of cricket in India that is largely a creation of BCCI + media?
Frankly, WHY are they pushing a tournament that can be held anytime, any place so long that it does not clash with constitutional norms?
Will the Indian, Diaspora or cricketing public not watch IPL matches if they are held After the elections? Do they genuinely feel that it will require the elections background to hold the public to their TV sets? Or what?
By the way, what percentage of India’s crores actually watch the cricket matches in the stadia or on TV? What is the actual percentage of population we are talking about here, versus the percentage of population that votes and is affected by the outcome of the polls?
Should we not suspect that there is something else behind the urgency of the IPL timetable?
The concern apparently seems to be only MONEY, money honey, money. Now that they have invested huge amounts of money in Buying Cricket Stars, they want to hold the matches quickly so that their profits are not diminished by interest costs.
And the hell with constitutional niceties or the cost of security. BCCI offered to get private security imported for their cricket stars to prevent any possible repeat of Lahore. What about the security of the public which would come to watch the matches? Are they dispensable, so long as the stakeholders, Modi and Co. have raked in their profits from the advertisement and other revenues and ticket monies etc?
The options, thrown up as so much hot air since no concrete detailing has yet be done, are England where their domestic season would be messed up, perhaps causing antipathy for not only India but also the Diaspora there for messing up with a national pastime and South Africa where fans would be at a high premium and logistics enough of a nightmare to put a question mark over the quantum of profits.
Is this just an attempt to use the media to blackmail the whole of India?
Why can the IPL matches be held after the elections, perhaps to take media and public attention from the horse trading that will inevitably follow in the process of setting up a new government in Delhi?

Inflation et all

The entire media is on the inflation-deflation band wagon, desperately trying to convince everyone that happy days are here again because we no longer have inflation to cope with.
Who the hell is concerned about inflation or its cousins, deflation or desflation or whatever else the economists and their favored media may chose to call it?
How is the public at large, the Aam Aadmi affected by this about turn in the fate of Inflation, long touted as their biggest Woe?
Despite the fall in inflation, there is no respite in the prices of anything to do with everyday living, the prices of onions, tomatoes, roti, milk or fruits. This is the season for those who do, to stock up a year’s supply of wheat and spices. But are the prices reflecting the harvest or the supposed death of inflation?
No restaurant or multiplex or even a vegetable lari has cut its rates. On the other hand, a startling 5.5% interest rate has been announced for the more expensive range of cars in the market. Are the people who go in for ‘luxury’ cars Aam Aadmi? Or even middle class?
Perhaps more pertinent for a supposedly burgeoning economy aspiring to be a Super Power on the world stage, what has happened to the interest rates?
Whenever the RBI ever raised its rates, any of the four crucial ones which affect its lending status with the banks, the effect on the banks’ customers was instantaneous. Interest rates across the board on cars, homes, personal etc would rise.
It is almost three months now since the RBI has been fiddling with its rates; any query with the banks, especially the so-called queens of the banking system, the private banks about interest coming down evokes the classic response:
”Madame we are calculating how much the lower the rate.”
Three months to calculate lowering rates, when hiking them used to be practically over night? Do we still want more private banks and foreign banks flooding our systems ask Most of Us.

Africa's "Clouds of Evil"

Pope Benedict XVI sees “clouds of evil” over Africa, which he says have reduced the poor to slavery and deprived future generations of the resources needed to create a more solid and just society.
Not a word of apology for the role played by the community he heads in creating that situation and those clouds. Is there any doubt that Africa has been ruined economically and socially by not only the colonists, the neo-colonists but also the missionaries, bringing their own brand of religion and polluting style of living to stamp out civilizations that had developed over millennia?
Is it not an open question that had perhaps they been allowed to survive, they may have done as well as other countries across the globe which have achieved ‘developing’ tag rather than the ‘under developed ‘ one where natural resources are still being looted by developed countries which dump their goods on them.

Main Kusum (2)

Yeh Hindustani banne ke chakkar mein, who feminine wali compliment to rahe gayee. Main feminine hoon; achha lagta hai feminine hona; masculine nahi. Main un auraton mein hoon jo apni femininity ko ghehna aur shakti dono banana chaheti hain.
Aaj kale ek craze ho gaya hai. Hamari kalaakar apne aap ko Actor Female kehlati hain. Kyo bhai? Actress hone mein kaisa sharm? Kya actor female kehne se unpe kam sexual harassment hogi?

Hum kyon hamesha purusho ke jaise bante hain ya sochne ki koshish karte hain? Kapron mein, vichar mein? Purushon ne duniya and samaj ka kya bana diya hai in sadiyon mein?
Kya hum ne bhi wahi karna hai, unke jaise soch ke?
Main sochti hoon ki Samaj ki bhalyee shaayad usme hogi ki hum auraton ke jaisi feminine zyaada aur male kam hi soch leke aage bhade.

Maine bahut chhoti umar mein hi kitab padne shuru kiya. Obviously chhoti hi umar mein hi purab ki soch vichar and sanskar se dil oog gaya. Kyon?
Maine yeh dekha ki mardon ne, chahe purabi ya paschim ke, lekhakon ne aurat ko apne khalayon ke dhanche me dhal diya hain. Unke khalayon mein ek tasveer basi hui hai “Auraton ko aise sochna chahiye, unki yeh icchain hain, woh aisa hi karti hain”…
Har lekhni mein aurtein wohi karti – sochti hain jo aadmi ka andaja hai ki aurton ko sochna-karna chahiye.
Bahut saari auratein aise hi karti hain jaise PITRUSATATAK samaj unse chahata hain. Kya karen? Jab se hosh sambala, wohi reet riwaz sikhaen jaaten hain taaki yeh PATRIARCHIAL samaj jaali rahein, jinda rahein. Aur kahaa maana aasaan bhi hota hain. doosri rahe chuun na kitna mushkil bhi hota hai, hai na?
Who auraton ka roop jo sadiyon pahele rachaaya gaya tha, woh aaj tak kavi, kathakar, lekhak ke madhyam se hum tak chala aa raha hain. us dhanche mein dhalne ke liye, Lakshmi bol kar Mangalsutra ke phende bande jaate hain, Rakhi aur Mamta ki bediyaan dhali jaati hain ya to Dahej aur Balatkaar ke APRADH BHAV se ghera jaata hai. Aur phir bhi jo ne mani, to agni to hai hi, safai karne ke liye……

Ek chhodkar Maine kabhi vrat nahi rakha. Karva Chauth 25 saal tak nibhaaya, phir Ram Ram kahaa. Uske liya bukhe pyaase rehne ki punishment KYON? Auraton ko aisa sochne ka haq hai?

Main aisi baatein sochti hoon … aur sochti hi rahe jaati hoon
Apne tanhaee mein. Bahut pasand hai mujhe meri tanhaee.
Sab ke sath khadi to rehti hoon Magar mere saath koi nahi
Kyon? Kyon ki mein sochti hoon?
Sochti hoon, magar bolti nahin hoon?
Magar likti aise ki padne wale kabhi kabhi bol padte hain
Aji yeh kya lika, kaise khayal aya?
Kya isi liye main akeli hoon?

Main Kusum

pichele dino mujhe ek bariha compliment mila
facebook pe ek saheli ne kahaa
kusumji you look very feminine and so indian”
ispe bahut khushi hui.

indian hone pe mujhe garv hain. shuru se.
jab Main college me thi, tab ek baar femina se best letter ke rs. 25 bhi mile the.
us chhithi mein Maine likha tha ki mere chehera truly indian tha kyon ki log yeh nahi pehchaan paate the ki Main sindhi hoon. koi punjabi/ maharshtran/ bengali to koi mussalman bhi samjhata tha.
ab Main aur bhi indian hoon, ek sindhan jis ne ek punjabi fauji se shaadi ki, hamara jamai sindhi-parsi hai, bahu jain aur hum sab gujarat mein rahete hain!! saara hindustan hua hamara na?

Main pali bhari videsh men. is ka matlab?
ek overseas indian mansikta (mentality) jo hindustan ko nashili ankhon se dekhti hain, bachpan ka alarrpan yaad karti hai and bharat ki kamiyaan zyaada nazar aati hain.
isliye khush naseeb hoon ki 13 saal ki umar mein hi wapas lauti.

march 1963 mein Bharat mein hamara swagat anokha hua. Hame Poona bhejne se pahele, Chachaji ne Bombay ke nazaare dikhaye. Sabse yaadgar raha Land’s End, jahan majoor darya mein pathar, kankar aur reti dhal rahen the. aaj who land’s end Nariman Point ke naam se jaani jaati hain, Mumbai ki sabse kimti ilaka. .
shaam ki gadi se Poona paunche and thak ke so gaye. subha savere maami ne jagaaya:
udho. aaj nal mein paani nahi hoga. bhar ke laana hoga.
pyjama suit chappal pahene, nani ke ghar ke pechhe ki diwar tapke a school compound mein pahunche jahan pe kuan and handpump tha. wahan pani ki lambi queue thi.
Tab to nahi magar baad mein khayal aaya
“wah kya baat hain. yeh hai hamara hindustan. kahin pe zameen ban rahi hai and yahan paani kuen se khinchna pad raha hai”.

school college hindustan mein padhi to yahaan ka mahaul and anubhav payee, kuch asliyatein jaani. kaee bhar sochti hun mujhe hindustani banane mein kis kis ks haath tha.
Sab se pahele to mere pitaji jo saari umar videsh mein to rahe magar kabhi apna indian passport nahi badla.
Poona mein college debates, khule dimaag se har vichar dhaara ke budhi jeevon ko sunna
Punjabi se shaadi jisne mujhe ek nayee fauji duniya dikhaee. Aaj bhare fakr se main kehti hoon main Fauji mahila hoon, mere parivaar ke 3 mardon meinse 2 fauj mein rahe.
Rishtedaron se door Ahmedabad mein baste hue, working woman ke saath saath ghreheri aur maa bhi ban na; aap sab in ehsaason se wakif hain aur jaante hain ki yeh hume kaise allah ke diye hue har hunar ko tarashna sikhate hain
Mere apne hindu dharm ke khoj ne
School ke baad hi patrakaari, bank and embassy mein naukriyan, gas agency chalana aur ak aisa unit chalana jis ne mujhe pehchaan karayi hamare bicchede hue dastakaaron se, who bunkaar, kalakar, tarashkar, jo neech jaati kahalaate hue bhi kya lajawaab khubsoorti paida karte hain. phir patrakaarita mein lauti
25 saal tak patrakaar rahekar chhor diya. creative writing shuru kee. Un 25 salon ki bahut emiyat thi meri MAIN ke liya, mere vichar and lekhni ko tarash ne mein.
